Panchakarma Technician Standards

 

Panchakarma Technician: Educational Competency Guidelines

 

The Panchakarma Technician is trained to provide hands on Ayurvedic therapies for the purpose of shaman chikitsa, and trained to support and help deliver the Panchakarma treatment program designed by the Ayurvedic Doctor and/or Ayurvedic Practitioner. The Panchakarma Technician is not trained to design, supervise or be responsible for a person’s individual Panchakarma programs.

 

Scope of Practice for a Panchakarma Technician:

  • May perform all Ayurvedic hands-on shamana therapies in a clinic or private practice with an emphasis on utilizing the therapies for purposes of shamana chikitsa.

  • May perform Panchakarma therapies in connection with a Panchakarma program under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic Doctor or Ayurvedic Practitioner with an emphasis on utilizing the therapies for purposes of shamana and shodana chikitsa.

 

Education:

  • Minimum equivalent of Category I, Ayurvedic Health Counselor (according to NAMA standards)

  •  Recommendation is to be an Allied Health Professional with a “license to touch” according to State regulations.

  

 

Panchakarma Technician Training:

 

  • A total of 250-350 hours in addition to the Ayurvedic Health Counselor training.
  • o   50% Theory
  • o   50% Practicum (25% practicum in the presence of a teacher (live in person practicum, not on-line based)
  • Practicum definition:  A practicum can include a demonstration by teacher, hands-on supervision in the presence of a teacher (not webcam), PK Technician in training individual client contact hours with a report back to their supervisor for review.

  • Therapies would include external treatments with one exception of netra basti.  
  • Based on individual state guidelines it is possible that the Panchakarma Technician may, in the future, have the ability to administer internal therapies like niruha basti, and uttara basti with the guidance of an Ayurvedic Doctor or Ayurvedic Practitioner. This would require additional training beyond the 350 hours.
  • Knowledge of indications and contraindications of Panchakarma.
  • Knowledge of indications and contraindications of shodana chikitsa
  • Knowledge of indications and contraindications of shamana chikitsa

 

Competency of Panchakarma Technician

 

  • Training in Panchakarma theory, hands on training and practicum.
  • Ability to interpret clinical findings and communicate and document clinical findings to Ayurvedic Doctor/Ayurvedic Practitioner.
  • Maintain a strong proficiency in indications and contraindications of Panchakarma Therapies.
  • Practice within the scope of practice set forth by the level of technical training in Panchkarma Certification Programs and individual state guidelines.

 

 Theory is to include (refer to chart 1):

  • History and ethics
  • Purvakarma – dipana, pachana, snehana and swedana.
  • Pradhanakarma – nasya, vamana, virechana, basti and raktamoksha.
  • Paschatkamra – samsarajana karma, dinacharya and rasayana.
  • Preparation for treatment
  • Care for the therapist
  • Safety and precautions
  • Indications/Contraindications

 

Training is to include (refer to chart 2):
 

  • Preparation for each treatment
  • Setting up of treatment room
  • Techniques
  • Demonstration
  • Application: Observation of clients
  • Our recommendation is that the hands on training segment should be supervised

 

Practicum is to include (refer to chart 3):
 

  • A set number of treatments should be performed and supervised by an Ayurvedic Doctor or Practitioner. We suggest that 25% of this practicum should be direct supervision.
  • A set number of treatments that are performed on their own that are managed privately.
  • Follow up discussion and/or paper to include a checklist and documentation of clinical hours.
