Tinnitus is commonly described as a ringing in the ears, but it also can sound like roaring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing. Termed karnanada in Ayurveda, these sounds may be soft or loud, high pitched or low pitched. Ayurveda approaches karnanada as a karnaroga (ear disease) studied under the diseases of head and neck and considers it an independent disease as well as a symptom of certain other diseases. Ayurvedic theory proposes that this condition occurs when the vitiated vata dosha gets lodged in the ear.
