Beyond the Skin: An Ayurvedic Approach to Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma) Through Classical Clinical Reasoning and Case-Based Management
Presented by Ram B Tamang, BAMS, ADLC
Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is a complex autoimmune progressive connective tissue disorder that affects quality of life. The clinical features of this disease may include fatigue, pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, dysphagia, and emotional distress.
This presentation explores an individualized Ayurvedic approach to the supportive management of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) alongside conventional care. Rather than equating the condition with a single classical disease, it applies Ayurvedic assessment through doṣa, dūṣya, agni, āma, srotas, and samprāpti, viewing it as Carmākhya Kuṣṭha-like features and Vāta predominance.
Classical Ayurvedic texts are integrated with modern concepts of immune dysregulation and fibrosis. A case-based treatment approach using Śodhana, Śamana Cikitsā, Panchakarma, herbal formulations, diet, lifestyle, and nervous system regulation is presented, along with clinical outcomes and safety considerations.

Topic: Shvitra (Vitiligo) in a Teenage Patient: An Integrative Approach
Presented by Dr. Usha Nagavarapu, PhD
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin condition in which melanocytes are destroyed, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment. This results in well-defined white patches that can appear anywhere on the body and may gradually spread over time.
This presentation emphasizes Ayurvedic assessment of vitiligo, including a case presentation revealing Vishamagni, Ama accumulation, Vata-Pitta imbalance, dry skin, and stress, alongside a modern understanding of autoimmune dysfunction, with a personalized treatment plan using Ayurvedic herbs and yoga for stress management.
It demonstrates the value of integrating Ayurvedic principles with conventional dermatologic care to address both the physical and psychological aspects of vitiligo while supporting overall health and well-being.
