What Do You Say?

IMG_5428.JPG

From time to time, NAMA will solicit feedback from members by posing a question here in our CURRENT NEWS section. Some questions will seek information of interest to NAMA’s members for members to interact and learn from each other. Other questions will ask for your input to help NAMA serve you more effectively. We want to hear from you. Please comment at the bottom of this post!

This month’s question comes from NAMA’s Membership Committee.

Q. How do you explain what Ayurveda is to someone who has never heard about it?

Drawing from a pool of eight highly qualified candidates, NAMA’s membership selected Heather Lynn Grzych, CAP; Jayarajan Kodikannath, BAMS AD; Dhanada Kulkarni, BAMS AD; and Alakananda Ma, MBBS AD, to fill four available seats on NAMA’s Board of Directors. Thank you to every member who voted. These four candidates will begin their term in November and serve through 2022. Also, to fill a recent board vacancy, the board has appointed Susan Weis-Bohlen to serve until the next board election as dictated by NAMA’s bylaws. We give our deepest appreciation to William Dean, Eric Grasser, and Monica Groover for their time on the board. Your service to NAMA has been greatly appreciated.

Heather Lynn Grzych, CAP

Heather believes that NAMA has laid the foundation for the Ayurvedic profession, but recognizes that Ayurvedic professional still face the challenge of establishing a successful  career. She knows that once students finish school, many have no idea how to set up and run a business. She wants to help NAMA empower Ayurvedic professionals with business skills.

Jayarajan Kodikannath, BAMS AD

As a classically trained Ayurvedic doctor from India, Jayarajan is passionate about propagating Ayurveda globally. His life’s mission comprises goals ranging from developing high-quality Ayurvedic educational programs and creating confident and capable Ayurvedic practitioners to bringing legal credibility to the Ayurvedic profession and building public awareness of Ayurvedic medicine.

Dhanada Kulkarni, BAMS AD

Dhanada has been practicing and teaching Ayurveda in the United States for 19 years. She feels blessed by the gift of Vedic knowledge from her Brahmin family. She believes that new Board members like her can use their background in classical Ayurvedic wisdom as a rasayana that will help nourish, advance, and sustain the practice of Ayurveda by preserving its authenticity.

8+Election+-+Ma_trim.jpg

Alakananda Ma, MBBS AD

Alakananda wants to see Ayurvedic education and schools flourish. She has served three terms as a member of Board and the Accreditation Council. She wants to wrap up her work as chair of the Standards Committee and see the program developed by the Accreditation Council become fully operational as it heads toward U.S. Department of Education recognition.

4 Election - Weis-Bohlen_trim.jpg

Susan Weis-Bohlen (Board Appointed Member)

Susan’s love for Ayurveda runs deep. Finding NAMA ten years ago helped her establish a community, a thriving practice, and access to the top Ayurvedic speakers and teachers. She wants to bring innovative ideas to conference, ongoing member engagement, make NAMA accessible to all, to continuing education, and to increase the Ayurvedic awareness to the public and all health practitioners.

Members, Here are all the Ways you can Earn PACE Credits!

IMG_6010.JPG

We know that NAMA has been sending you quite a few emails regarding your PACE standing. Given that maintaining your certification level is a new task for many of you, we want to support you by sharing information on all of the ways that you can earn credits. We often find that members have earned continuing education credits without even realizing it! Here are a few ways you can earn PACE credits:

Topics in Ayurveda (TIA) *Remember one credit is earned per one hour of education.

Any of the many aspects of Ayurvedic medicine can be considered a “Topic in Ayurveda. You can earn credit for any course or workshop on topics in Ayurveda or her sister sciences, such as:

  • Ayurvedic herbalism

  • Jyotish

  • Vastu

  • Sanskrit study

  • Ayurvedic yoga therapy

If your course is on the PACE Listing page, you need to submit a PDF of your certificate of completion for the course through the PACE Listings page to get credit for it. If your course is not on the PACE Listing page, you need to submit a PDF of your certificate of completion for the course along with the form for a “Non-Listed Topic in Ayurveda” course to receive credit for it.

Note: For the 2016–2017 cycle, counselors must submit 12–18 TIA credits, practitioners and doctors need 26–38 TIA credits. For the 2081–2019 cycle, all professional members must earn 19–28 TIA credits.

Topics in Wellness (TIW):

Did you do a YTT this year? Have you tackled massage therapy or dived deeper into Traditional Chinese Medicine? Maybe you are studying biochemistry or social psychology. Those are all considered “Topics in Wellness.” Any topic in the sphere of general healing and wellness counts. Log those in!

Note: For the 2016–2017 cycle, counselors can submit 0–6 TIW credits; practitioners and doctors can submit 0–12 TIW credits. For the 2018–2019 cycle, all professional members can earn 0–9 TIW credits.

If your course is on the PACE Listing page, you need to submit a PDF of your certificate of completion for the course through the PACE Listings page to get credit for it.

If your course is not on the PACE Listing page, you need to submit a PDF of your certificate of completion for the course along with the form for a “Non-Listed Topic in Wellness” course to get credit for it.

Teaching Ayurveda

You may earn up to 15 credits for teaching Topics in Ayurveda courses during the PACE cycle. General “Introduction to Ayurveda” courses do not qualify for PACE teaching credits (as important as those courses are!). Teaching Ayurveda PACE credits apply only if you have taught advanced Ayurveda courses to Ayurvedic health counselors, practitioners, or doctors or if you have presented workshops at conferences or professional gatherings.

Note: You may earn up to 15 credits for teaching per PACE cycle. Once again, this means one hour per one credit.

Research:

Have you published any scholarly articles on research in Ayurveda? If so, informing us of the peer-reviewed journal it was published in will earn you 15 PACE credits!

Seminars in Ayurveda:

Did you know that as a NAMA member, you have access to the nine years’ worth of FREE Seminars in Ayurveda in our library. These are unique, monthly recordings offered by Ayurvedic professionals that cover an expansive spectrum of topics in Ayurvedic medicine. You may earn one PACE credit per Seminar in Ayurveda, and there are over 75 available on the website! To earn credits for a seminar after you listened to it, find the seminar on the PACE Listing page, and complete the survey.

You may submit PACE credits through our PACE submission form. Both the 20162017 and the 20182019 PACE cycles end on December 31, 2019.

Keep an eye out for our emails to know exactly how many credits you still need to complete before the end of the cycle. Once you’ve documented that you’ve earned enough credits to meet your PACE requirements, the emails will end!

In addition, make sure to pass your ethics quizzes! There is one for each cycle (20162017 and 20182019). Make sure you pass them both!

Hopefully, this e-blast has sparked a few ideas on how you may have been inadvertently earning PACE credits for the last couple of years without even knowing it.

We appreciate all of your efforts to elevate the stature of Ayurveda in the West and to move its enduring principles to the forefront of medicine in the United States!

“I Need to Take More Courses”
If you need to take more courses to meet your PACE requirements, you can find hundreds of courses offered by NAMA members around the world. Go to the PACE Listings page. There are many ways to filter the search results to find the course you want.

More courses are coming. Did you miss out on the chance to earn PACE credits at the April 2019 Conference? NAMA will soon be extending that opportunity by posting videos of this year’s conference sessions that you can purchase online so you can gain credits by tuning into them at your convenience. There will also be a few extra live Seminars in Ayurveda later in the fall. PACE Providers are offering new courses almost every day.
