Course Description:
Making herbal products is not only simple and affordable, but most importantly it’s fun! This dynamic hands on course will provide you with the necessary skills to become confident in traditional herbal practices. The goal of this class is to teach participants to select good quality herbs for the imbalance they would like to correct, and produce high quality herbal products for common health ailments to improve the wellness of friends and family.
The time spent together will be divided into discussion and herbal creation. As we dive into the art of herbalism the hands-on lab will teach students extraction methods to make a wide variety of herbal remedies such as decoctions, infusions, tinctures, salves, lotion, herbal oils, ghee, pastes and juices. Students will have products to take home, formulation worksheets, and the knowledge necessary to expand on their own. Discussion topics will include harvesting herbs, methods for drying, and storing herbs; formulation and dosages; materia-medica and properties of herbs. This class is geared towards all levels, no prior experience is necessary.

Course Objectives:
1. Teach students to identify herbs and practice sustainable harvesting techniques.
2. Teach students to formulate and properly prepare Water-Based Extractions- Infusions and Decoctions using Western and Ayurvedic principles.
3.Teach students to formulate and properly prepare Oil-Based Extractions- Herbal Oil Infusions and Ghee using Western and Ayurvedic principles.
4.Teach students to formulate and properly prepare Herbal juices, pastes, jams, and confections using Western and Ayurvedic principles.
5.Teach students to formulate and properly prepare Tinctures using Western principles.
6.Teach students to formulate and properly prepare salves and herbal lotions using Western principles.

Provider/Faculty Bio:
Jackie Christensen, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized educator in natural health, herbology, and Ayurveda. She serves as a faculty member for many prestigious colleges. Her achievements include graduating on the Dean's Honor List for the Doctoral degree in Naturopathy and receiving a Master’s in Ayurveda from Mount Madonna Institute of Ayurveda. She is also a certified Nutritional Consultant, Master Herbalist, and National Ayurveda Medical Association (NAMA) member. Jackie has hosted international study abroad programs as well as local workshops, online classes, and conferences. Jackie Christensen, Ph.D., has a private practice in Santa Cruz, CA
