Course Description
Foundations II:  Includes 7 multimedia lessons, handouts, quizzes and course certificate.  Explores intermediate principles of Ayurveda & the development of diagnostic ability.  Course is self-paced.  Note:  Student may choose to register for individual lesson(s), and may be granted PACE credits by applying for credit for a “non-listed” course for each lesson.  Contact us at projects@drclaudiawelch.com for more information.  

Course Objective:
Foundations II:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be familiar with the following principles:

  • The thirteen types of agni (digestive and transformational fires)

  • The seven dhātus (bodily tissues), and their associated upadhātus (secondary tissues) and malas (wastes)

  • The main functions of the seven dhātus

  • The fundamentals of how each dhātu is created, nourished and transformed

  • Symptoms associated with the entry of each doṣa into each dhātu

  • The srotāṃsi (physiological channels) of the body and mind

  • The signs and symptoms of vitiated srotāṃsi and possible causes of vitiation

  • Ayurvedic psychology: understanding various perspectives on how the mind and body affect each other

  • Rasa (taste), vīrya (energetics), vipāka (post-digestive effect), and prabhāva (special effects) of dravya (substances)

  • The six stages of saṃprāpti (pathogenesis)

  • The difference between śamana (gentle doṣa-palliative procedures) and śodhana (forcible expulsion of doṣa from the body) in the resolution of disorders

Dr Claudia Welch has been a lifelong student of life and medicine. She has practiced Āyurveda, has worked in Eastern medicine education, is licensed as Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and the author of Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life: Achieving Optimal Health and Wellness Through Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine and Western Science and, The Four Qualities of Effective Physicians: Practical Ayurvedic Wisdom for Modern Physicians.

Dr. Welch has lectured internationally on Oriental medicine and Āyurveda, exploring how Eastern medicine applies to Women’s Health, and today’s reality in general. She has served on the teaching faculty of The Āyurvedic Institute, Kripalu School of Ayurveda, Southwest Acupuncture College, and Acupractice Seminars.
